Egg Drop - Winning design

Scott's new design, the one that worked, was deceptively simple. After we threw away our egg-soaked baggie in the original "flimsy box" design, we looked around the lab and found several of these plastic containers that are used to collect hazardous waste. Fortunately, we found a new one, and even more fortunately, it fell well within the mass limit.
We wrapped an egg in bubble wrap and closed the cover, thereby compressing the "ends" of the bubble wrap "tube" and giving the egg some protection on all sides. The design worked great. In several (approx 10-15) tests last Saturday, only once did the egg break, and we quickly determined that we had wrapped it rather poorly. At the end of our afternoon, we got so confident in the design that Scott tried throwing it into the parking lot from the 2nd floor walkway. Worked fine. Then he tried spiking |

This test was about 2x shorter than the actual egg drop distance that they used in Scott's class. Fortunately, his design stood up to the extra velocity of impact and he passed the test.

Throwing far into the parking lot. See how it rolls.

Throwing it upwards, to give it a faster impact velocity.

Spiking like a football. Another way to increase the impact velocity.
