I took this photo in 1999 from the stern of my friend's sailboat. Tonight the kid on the right, my older son, will graduate from high school. How quickly time passes!

This is a typical morning in San Diego. 9:00 am and its still cloudy, misty, near the ocean. The marine layer lifts later in the day and sometimes we get some sun, but not often enough during the month of June. Some call it "June gloom," but I tend to enjoy the quiet and the lack of a need to squint when I'm outside. We get enough sunny days during the other times of year. Funny how the seasons sort of flip-flop out here. Some of our clearest, sunniest days are in January and February.

I renewed my annual parking pass for California State Parks yesterday. The price has risen to $125/year, which seems pretty high, but for me it's well worth it. This is my motivation to keep up my exercise program of running along the trails near the ocean. Trail running is best for me, better than roads, sidewalks, or even the beach, because it's easier on my legs. On the hard flat surfaces, my foot hits the ground the same way all the time, and it isn't so great on my knees and ankles. The trails are varied, with sand, dirt, rocks, roots, and even a few lizards. No, I don't step on the lizards, but they certainly keep me interested. Each step is an adventure and slightly different for my legs and joints. And the view is fantastic. Why I don't go out here every day is only a testiment to…

I usually dont' care much for sunset photos. They always seem to come out less spectacular than what I remember seeing. This one's the same; this sunset was much prettier than what you see here. But hey, it's Hawaii.

Nothing quite like the blues in Hanauma Bay on the southeast corner of O'ahu. Some of the best snorkeling in the world.

Sometimes I just sit thinking how nice it is up in Maine.
