Green pen
Photo

I've been grading in green pen lately, rather than red. I'm hoping it's a little less depressing for students to see my comments in happy green instead of blood red. Of course, whenever I write a comment on an exam, I hope the students take it as additional instruction or suggestions, and not just a bad grade. At least that's the hope.

Brand spankin' new lab

Less than a year old, our new lab building has its shortcomings, but overall is quite amazing. This room alone has eleven fume hoods, compared to the two and a half that we had in the old building. This is where I spend Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights this summer, from around 6:30 til whenever all the students go home, or later, if I'm surfin' Buzznet.

My evenings.
Photo

This is my evening workplace, where I teach chemistry a couple of nights per week. This, not my full-time day job, is the job that energizes me to the extent that I can't go to sleep until way after midnight on teaching days. It ain't the hallowed halls of Princeton or Harvard, but my students work just as hard, and learn just as much in their intro chemistry course inside this new science building.
